Year 1

Year 1

As the children leave EYFS, the staff in Year One strive to provide a smooth transition into Key Stage 1. We spend time ensuring children are learning through play in our provision areas as well as developing the children’s independent skills through group and whole class tasks.

Year One has two classes of keen, vibrant children who are ready to learn.  The class teachers are Mrs Robertson, Miss Rogers, Miss Wood and Miss Boyes.  We have a fabulous, hardworking team of support teachers and teaching assistants including Miss Best and Miss Sheikh.

When you enter the Year One classrooms you will find colourful, vibrant, fun places with lots of active learning taking place. The Year One curriculum includes a mixture of independent play activities alongside teacher led paired, group and individual tasks.  Our lessons use a thematic approach to learning and we aim to provide learning that the children enjoy and can relate to.

The Year One themes include: Animal Magic, London’s Burning, Family Fortunes, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, Go Wild and Dream Machines.

Phonics plays a large part of the Year One curriculum as we teach children how to read, write and spell using the sounds letters make in words. The children are encouraged to read at home every night, learn spellings for weekly spelling tests and complete homework each week. Each half term our new theme and learning is shared with parents in our curriculum letters as well as knowledge organisers that contain key vocabulary associated with our theme for your child to become familiar with.

All communication is sent via the Parent App, Seesaw App or uploaded onto this web page.

As the children leave Year One we aim for the children to be independent, resilient and imaginative learners ready to…

DREAM of what they can do,

BELIEVE in themselves and their capabilities,

ACHIEVE their potential.

Mrs Robertson, Miss Rogers, Miss Boyes and Miss Wood – The Year One Team.
