In Year 4, the children’s learning journey continues through the themes of the Egyptians, Rivers and Mountains, Crime and Punishment, Electricity, The Demon Dentist and Travel from Preston through Europe. All themes are brought to life in each area of the curriculum, from the choice of story or book focus in English to the expert Art and Music teaching across the year. Children in Year 4 will undertake a range of interesting and engaging activities that will enhance their learning and help them remember their Year 4 experience. Throughout their year in Year 4, children will bake their own bread in DT and design and create their own travel bag in textiles. During their science units, Year 4 children will continue to develop both their scientific skills by creating water cycles and digestive system models and making lanterns and torches with electrical circuits.
English in Year 4 is made fun and exciting through drama, role-play and a range of quality texts which are relevant and interesting to the children with their writing having a real purpose. Some of the books the children will read include, ‘I was a Rat’ by Philip Pullman, ‘Varjak Paw’’ by S F Said and ‘The Demon Dentist’ by David Walliams. So many picture books, poems, scripts and non-fiction texts are used to enhance each topic throughout the year. At Queen’s Drive we teach a mastery approach in Maths. As children move into Year 4, Maths skills continue to develop and they gain further understanding of the number system through negative numbers and decimals. By the end of the year children in Year 4 should know all multiplication facts and will undergo their Multiplication Check.
