Phases of the Moon

Year 5 had a fantastic time learning about the phases of the moon in a creative and delicious way! Using Oreo cookies, the children modelled the lunar cycle, transforming the cookies into representations of the moon’s different phases. From the new moon to the full moon and all the crescents and quarters in between, the class carefully scraped, shaped, and arranged the filling to create accurate depictions of each stage.
This hands-on activity helped the children visualise and remember the sequence of the moon’s phases. It also sparked discussions about why the moon changes shape in the night sky and the science behind its orbit around Earth.
The pictures captured their enthusiasm and the impressive models they created. Not only was it an engaging way to learn, but it also reinforced teamwork and creativity. We hope you enjoy seeing the photos as much as the children enjoyed this out-of-this-world lesson! 🌙✨
