Art
We are strong believers in the hugely positive impact of Art and Design at Queen’s Drive Primary School. It forms a crucial part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Art provides children with the opportunity to develop and extend their skills, to express their individual interests and ideas, whilst also contributing to the development of our children; emotionally, aesthetically, spiritually, intellectually and socially.
High quality Art education equips children with the skills to explore, experiment, create and invent their own works of art whilst engaging, inspiring and challenging them. As artists, children should be able to critically evaluate their work and the work of others, taking influence from currently practising artists, culturally diverse artists, local artists and famous artists of the past. The children will learn to adapt their work accordingly based on the medium and practice of these artists.
As their skill set progresses, they should understand how Art has changed their landscape, culture and history. They will learn that Art is a commentary on personal experience of the world around us and begin to develop their own individual style. This is particularly important for our children who have SEND or struggle in English and/or Maths. Art provides a platform for all to thrive, building positive relationships with education, raising ambition, and improving self-esteem.
Our teaching of Art promotes our children's wellbeing, happiness and feelings of relaxation and calm in this increasingly hectic environment we live in. It encourages them to use their imagination and experiment freely with media. We aim to foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers, whilst also encouraging pupils to appreciate the beauty, order and precision that is found, naturally and man-made, in our world.
