RSE
What is Relationships and Sex Education?
RSE (formerly SRE) is about the emotional, social and cultural development of pupils, and involves learning about relationships, sexual health, sexuality, healthy lifestyles, diversity and personal identity.
RSE involves a combination of sharing information and exploring issues and values.
RSE is not about the promotion of sexual activity or a particular sexual orientation.
Intended outcomes
Once taught the full scheme, children will have met the objectives set out within the Relationships and Health Education statutory guidance and can utilise their learning within their daily lives, from dealing with friendship issues to resilience to making healthy choices and knowing where and how to get help when needed.
Parents and carers currently have the right to withdraw their children only from all or part of those elements of RSE which are not included in the statutory national curriculum Programmes of Study for Science. At Queen’s Drive this involved two lessons in Year 6. As a parent you have the right to withdraw your child from those elements which fall within the non-statutory guidance for PSHE. We will always invite parents into school the term before these lessons are taught in Year 6 to go over the lessons, share the resources and be available for questions and go over the right to withdraw. The school will make alternative arrangements for children whose parents or carers withdraw them.
Any parent or carer who wishes to withdraw their child from non-statutory elements of RSE should, in the first instance, contact the Head Teacher to discuss this further. There will be a discussion, to explain clearly which areas of RSE are currently statutory and which are non-statutory.
Relationship Education
Relationships Education is compulsory for Primary pupils from September 2020. It is our aim at Queen’s Drive Primary School to support our pupils to be happy, healthy and safe. We aim to provide our children with the information needed to develop healthy, nurturing relationships through their childhood and into adult life.
Relationships Education at Queen’s Drive will start in EYFS as our children develop their understanding of their own relationships with family and friends: how to treat each other with kindness and respect. This develops through KS1 as children are taught to recognise the difference between online and offline friendships. We will support our pupils to develop respect for others and for difference.
During the Summer Term 2019, in consultation with our parents, we developed a Curriculum Overview for each Year Group. Relationships Education forms part of our PSHE Curriculum.
This was discussed in detail at our Governor Body meetings
We aim to work closely with our parents to deliver Relationships Education. Parents are invited to discuss any aspect of our Relationships Education with their child's class teacher or Headteacher.
The relationship curriuclum is within the PSHE curriculum.
