How we teach spelling

Most people tend to read words a lot better than they spell them and this is especially true in younger children and so we link spellings with their phonics work in KS1.
This teaching and learning of spelling in the EYFS and Key Stage 1 is underpinned by the use of a high quality phonics programme, alongside the National Curriculum requirements for spelling in Years 1 and 2.  Our phonics programme is Lancashire Red Rose Letters and Sounds.

We build on the Lancashire Red Rose Phonics from EYFS and KS1 into Red Rose Spelling in Y2 which also progresses into Year 3.

Also from Year 3 we  follow a  programme called  ‘No Nonsense Spelling’. This programme is designed to deliver the statutory content of the Primary National Curriculum for spelling. Through weekly teaching of spelling objectives and development of a whole school approach to word transcription, vocabulary development and proof-reading, the programme aims to develop children as proficient spellers.  We also supplement this with ‘Spelling Shed’ resources.

You will find the end of year expectations for spelling for each of our year groups in the attached documents. For further detail on the skills that your children are learning on a weekly basis, please contact your class teacher.

Throughout their time here at Queen’s Drive, we aim to develop a school of spellers who use a series of strategies in lessons and in their independent writing. Spelling homework is set weekly in KS1 and KS2. Spelling lists based on the objectives being taught are sent home weekly.

The National Curriculum sets out spelling rules to be learnt according to year group, as well as a list of key exception words for Years 3-6. Each year group will cover these rules throughout the academic year but reinforcing these rules at home will be of huge help to your child.

Please see attached some useful documents to support your child at home in spelling.
